The Russian "Prodimex" group of companies has launched a large-scale program on sugar supply to Uzbekistan, the business information agency Abireg.ru reported.

So far, Uzbekistan has received 50 wagons of sugar and new volumes are shipped daily.

"As the country sees a surplus of sugar this season, we are forced to export surplus abroad. Uzbekistan is a potentially interesting market for us," said Vadim Yeryzhensky, deputy director of the Prodimex Group.

He added that Russian sugar supplies to Uzbekistan were last carried out 26 years ago.

Russia and Uzbekistan agreed on the export of sugar by Russian producers during the visit of the Minister of Agriculture Alexander Tkachev to Uzbekistan in September 2017. Then the agreement on deliveries was signed between the Union of Sugar Producers of Russia and Uzbekozikovkhatholding.

The annual demand of Uzbekistan for sugar is about 700,000 tons. There are two factories in the country - Khorezm Sugar Factory and Angren Shakar, launched in 1998.

Experts say that before the end of the year the country will need to import at least 120-150,000 tons of sugar.
