Kazakhstan will hold an international competition for a feasibility study to construct a nuclear power plant in 2018.
Kazatomprom has already established a special company for construction of the nuclear power plant, but the final decision on its construction will be taken only after the competition ends, the 24 Khabar TV channel reported.
The presumed site for the nuclear power plant is Kurchatov city due to its favorable conditions for construction.
"Kurchatov is a perfect place for construction of an NPP. But from the point of view of the energy balance, it is not very good, because we have coal here, the city already has its own resources for energy production," said Erlan Batyrbekov, general director of the National Nuclear Center of Kazakhstan.
According to Batyrbekov, Balkhash city is probably the most suitable in this respect from the point of view of location and the need for energy resources.
