In the current Iranian year (started March 21), 358 tons of safflower seeds were bought from farmers in Iran's East Azerbaijan province, executive director of Iran's 8th zone crops and trade services organization, Isfandiyar Abulhasanzadeh said in an interview with IRNA.

Abulhasanzadeh noted that one kilogram of safflower seeds were bought for 26,186 Iranian rials (roughly $0.62) from the farmers of the province.

He added that in total 8.69 billion Iranian rials (roughly $206,000) were paid to the farmers.

Abulhasanzadeh stressed that safflower growing is important due to relatively low water consumption during the growing process.

He also added that presently, Iran's Agriculture Ministry aims to ensure food security in the country.

Safflower oil is considered to be one of the healthiest oils and pressed safflower is also used for preparing feed for animals and birds.
