Turkmenistan building high-speed highway to Uzbekistan

“Turkmen Autobahn” CJSC will start to build the Ashgabat-Turkmenabat high-speed highway in January 2019, Trend reports referring to state news agency “Turkmen Dovlat Habarlary”.

The construction of the project, with a total cost of $2.3 billion, is supposed to be carried out between 2019-2023.

As part of this project, the Ashgabat-Tedjen section is planned to be commissioned in December 2020; Tedjen – Mary section in December 2022; Mary-Turkmenabat section in December 2023.

This project was discussed at governmental meeting. President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov stressed the significance of this project for the Turkmen economy and international interaction necessity of strict control for realization.

The Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of Turkmenistan is the customer and general contractor through the “Turkmen Autobahn” Company. A new highway will allow access for transit traffic flows to Uzbekistan and later to an extensive system of continental routes and junction with the Ashgabat-Turkmenbashi highway is a possibility of quick and convenient access to the international Caspian port of Turkmenbashi.

There are several highways of international importance such as Turkmenbashi – Ashkhabad – Mary-Turkmenabat – Farab - state border of Uzbekistan; Ashgabat – Dashoguz; Ashgabat – Gaudan; Turkmenbashi – Bekdash and Serdar – Gudriolum on the territory of Turkmenistan.

International road transport of goods is carried out through the following border crossing points: Artyk, Gaudan, Sarakhs, Bekdash, Gudriolum ferry crossing cities Turkmenbashi, Dashoguz, Kunyaurgench, Farab, Gazojak, Talimarjan, Imam Nazar and Serhetabat. Turkmenistan is land bordered by Kazakhstan, Iran, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan and sea bordered by Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan and Iran.
