Container transport in Georgia continues to keep high growth rates, Trend reports with reference to commersant.ge.

According to the data for the first six months of 2019, container traffic at the port of Poti increased by 40 percent.

“If such growth continues in the second half of the year, the cargo turnover in 2019 will amount to 600,000 TEU,” said Financial Director of Anaklia City company Georgi Chugoshvili. According to him, at the moment, there is an urgent need to complete the construction of the port of Anaklia.

During their visit to Thailand, Head of the Supervisory Board of TBC Bank Mamuka Hazaradze and Executive Director of Anaklia City Keti Bochorishvili held a meeting with representatives of various industries and major logistics and industrial companies, such as Nohara Denken, JWD Infologistics, Grimm Power Plants and Amata City.

According to Keti Bochoroshvili, Port Anaklia and the city that is planned to be built with it, will create thousands of new jobs. The new port will allow to receive five times more cargo than all the available ports of the country are capable of receiving at that moment.

The construction of the port began on December 24, 2017, with the first stage to be completed in 2020.

“There is no experience in implementing such large projects in Georgia yet, so we have to look for international companies that can assist us. The port will open up new opportunities for the country. For example, from 2021, when the second phase of construction work begins, the port will already accept vessels with a capacity of 10,000 TEU, whereas now the Georgian ports accept ships of no more than 1,500 TEU. Accordingly, container services will become cheaper, and the port will be equipped with the latest equipment,” she said.
