Shalamche – Basra railway links Iran, Iraq, Syria railway network

Installation of Shalamcheh-Basra railway will start in Iran in order to complete the joint railway network between Iran, Iraq and Syria, said Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development.

Shahram Adamnejad discussed the details of the project that will link Iran, Iraq and Syria in an interview with Trend.

"The three brotherly countries have good relations and growing potential capacities. The new agreements concluded by Iran, Iraq and Syria countries open new chapter of the cooperation and will increase trade in the region," he said.

"It is necessary to facilitate the transportation and transit, and the support provided by private sector and companies will have significant role in international cargo and passenger transportation, which can be executed by public organizations," he added.

" The Ministry of Road and Urban Development has intensely worked through diplomatic channels in past months to hold first trilateral transportation meeting between Iran, Iraq and Syria, which is expected to produce good results," he said underlying the importance of the issue.

"A transportation committee of three countries including expert working groups will be established for main directions of the project," he added.

"Development of transit network and reviving transit from east to west along Silk Road through connecting corridor to Central Asia and equalizing customs fees have been negotiated," he noted.

" Iran will conclude memorandum of understanding with Iraq to install Shalamche – Basra railway to complete the railway connection between three countries for cargo and passengers transport," he said.
