Trend:

Iran's northern and southern ports have potential to transit cargo to Central Asian countries, stated a member of Iran Chamber of Commerce.

"The capacity of Iran's northern and southern ports allows for using them to transit cargo to landlocked countries, for example, in Central Asia as well as to Iraq and Afghanistan," said Majid Pourkaed, Trend reports citing IRNA.

"The increase of exports volume should be on the agenda, and transit of imports to neighbor countries should be supported," he added.

"Investors can help to develop the ports an their services. Foreign investors can use the ports and hinterlands to export local products to their destination market at lower price," he noted.

He went on to say: "Good location of Iran's ports in the international waters can be useful for production in ports and hinterlands. The current distance between Khorramshahr Port and Kuwait's Free Trade Zone in Shuwaikh port is only four hours, and this creates an opportunity for cargo transit from East Asia to southern Caspian Sea nations via Iran's ports."

"The rail services are currently the best means for cargo transit through Iranian ports. Thus, expanding railway network through the country's ports will increase the transportation volume," he added.
