Since the beginning of the current sowing season, the area under wheat has reached 6 million hectares in Iran, Adviser to Iran’s Agriculture Minister Esmaeil Esfandiaripour said, Trend reports referring to the website of Iran’s Agriculture Ministry.
So far, 1.9 million hectares of irrigated land and slightly over 4 million hectares of dry land have been planted with wheat, the minister noted.
Esfandiaripour added that continuation of efforts to increase wheat production is needed.
The minister said that meetings of the wheat-related technical committee continue to be held to ensure reduction of losses in wheat harvesting and accurate management in this sphere.
In the current Iranian year (began on March 21, 2019), Iran has produced 14 million tons of wheat. The country's annual wheat consumption is 11.5 million tons. Iranian wheat growers have refused to sell their crop to state procurement companies due to unjust prices. According to reports, farmers have not sold three million tons of wheat to the state companies.
