Volume of kilka caught in Mazandaran province of Iran revealed

As many as 18,800 tons of kilka worth 780 billion rials (about $18.5 million) were fished from Caspian sea at the Mazandaran province in northwestern Iran in last Iranian year (from March 21, 2019 to March 20, 2020), said Ghasem Karimzadeh, Administrator of Fishing office in the Mazandaran province, Trend reports citing the office's website.

According to Karimzadeh, fishing of kilka increased by about 1,000 tons (10 percent) compared to the preceding year (from March 21, 2018 to March 21, 2019). At the same time, the income of fishermen increased by 56 percent.

Karimzadeh added that 95 percent of the kilka caught are ordinary species.

The kilka fishing in the Caspian Sea in Iran started in late April and lasted until mid-March. In Mazandaran, fishermen catch kilka using 44 boats. About 85 percent of the caught kilka is converted into fish powder.

More 338 km of the Caspian Sea coast is located in Mazandaran province.
