Iran expects domestic wheat production to reach 14 million tons

TEHRAN,Iran, May 25

Trend:

Iran's Agriculture Ministry estimates that wheat production in the country would reach 14 million tons, an adviser to the agriculture minister Esmail Esfandiaripour told Trend.

"The country's wheat cultivation capacity is around 6.5 million hectares - that two third of it is water and one third is dried farming," he said.

"It is expected that due to current situation, around 14 million tons of wheat will be harvested in the country during the current Iranian year (began March 20,2020)," he said.

"So far since March 1, more than 1.8 million tons of wheat has been delivered to Government Trading Corporation of Iran," he added.

Esfandiaripour also pointed out that rainfall, use of pesticides and fertilizers, along with new irrigation methods contributed to the increase of wheat production.

"Iran does not have the wheat export approach and our focus is to satisfy domestic needs, that's the priority. Export is for resources that can bring foreign currency revenues," he said.

"Iran has consumed 13.5 million tons of wheat in the last Iranian year (began March 21,2019)," he said.

Speaking of the problems in the wheat sector, the official said pointed to provision of resources from the Central Bank of Iran to the Government Trading Corporation of Iran, so that local farmers get paid on time.
