TEHRAN, Iran, Sep.15

Deputy Governor of Sistan and Baluchestan Province announced the importance of the Milak border terminal located in the north of this province for Iran and Afghanistan in terms of exports and imports.
"Considering the importance of the Milak border terminal for Iran and Afghanistan, the transit through this border should be facilitated,” Deputy Governor of Sistan and Baluchestan Province, Mandana Zanganeh said, Trend reports citing IRNA.
She went on to say that to facilitate transit at the Milak border terminal, it is necessary to create two round-trip routes for passing vehicles.
The Deputy Governor of Sistan and Baluchestan Province for Economic Affairs said that Afghanistan is a gateway to Central Asian countries, so the Milak border terminal plays a significant role in Iran`s export-import relations with CIS countries.
Milak is situated on the Afghanistan-Iran border. It is one of the major junctions that connect land-locked Afghanistan to international waters through Iran. After the collapse of the Taliban government in Afghanistan, Milak lost importance in the transit of goods to Afghanistan. In recent years, Afghanistan, Iran, and India have agreed to reactivate the Milak route by building a new international logistics hub in Chabahar, connected to Milak.
In 2004, the governments of Iran and Afghanistan officially reopened the Milak-Zaranj border crossing, which is heavily used today and crosses the Helmand River.
There is also a project underway for a railway connection to Chabahar via Zahedan.
