Turkmenistan, Georgia may introduce advanced technologies in cargo transportation

BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 12

By Jeila Aliyeva - Trend:

Turkmenistan and Georgia have discussed proposals for deepening cooperation with the use of seaports, introduction of advanced technologies in the cargo transportation system, and simplification of customs and tariff regulation, Trend reports with reference to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.

These proposals were considered during a videoconference of Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia David Zalkaliani.

The trade and economic cooperation between the countries has slowed down due to the global pandemic, the report says. In this regard, the parties noted the need to intensify meetings of the intergovernmental Turkmen-Georgian Commission on economic cooperation, which contributes to strengthening partnership in trade, industry, and investment.

The parties expressed satisfaction with the promotion of joint projects and agreements in energy sector. In particular, the successful functioning of the Lapis Lazuli Corridor was noted.

Also, the sides praised effectiveness of partnership within international structures, mainly within the UN.

The ministers also discussed cultural and humanitarian cooperation. Thus, the possibilities of expanding the intercultural dialogue by creating a special mechanism were considered.

As earlier the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia told Trend, Turkmenistan and Georgia maintained an upward in freight transportation between Turkmenistan and Georgia despite the outbreak of the COVID-19 and its negative impact on global supply chains.

“Freight volumes transported between Georgia and Turkmenistan via road and rail increased by 7.9 percent from January through May 2020,” said earlier the source.

The Georgian ministry earlier noted that in 2019, more than 300,000 tons of goods were transported between Turkmenistan and Georgia via road in transit, and nearly 920,000 tons of goods were transported via rail.
