Uzbekistan, World Bank in talks over mitigating economic impact of COVID-19

Uzbekistan, World Bank discussed topical aspects of further mitigating the economic consequences of the coronavirus pandemic, Trend reports referring to the press service of the Senate of Uzbekistan.

Chairman of Senate of Uzbekistan Tanzila Norbaeva and Regional Director of the World Bank for Central Asia Lilia Burunciuc discussed issues related to the current state and prospects of bilateral cooperation.

During the meeting, it was emphasized that the constructive interaction of Uzbekistan with the World Bank received a new impetus in light of the fundamental transformations carried out in the country in recent years.

Joint projects are being implemented in the areas of public administration, agriculture, environmental protection, and natural resource management. The implementation of the projects continues consistently, despite the worldwide pandemic.

Speaking about the consequences of the pandemic, it was emphasized that Uzbekistan is one of the few countries in the world where economic growth is observed. In this regard, it was noted that this is the result of deep social and political reforms carried out in the country in recent years.

“Authoritative international structure is ready to continue to provide recommendations and financial resources to increase the efficiency of the reforms” was stated at the meeting.

The parties also touched upon Uzbekistan's measures to prevent forced labor in the cotton harvest, gender issues, and relevant aspects of further mitigating the economic consequences of the pandemic.

Lilia Burunciuc noted the decisive and effective measures taken by the leadership of Uzbekistan aimed at preventing forced labor and protecting human rights, as well as ensuring gender equality.
