Azerbaijan ramps up import of Japan products

The volume of imports from Japan to Azerbaijan grew from $129.1 to over $130.9 million (by 1.3 percent) in the past 8 months of the 2020 year on year, Trend reports citing the statistical bulletin of the State Customs Committee (SCC) of Azerbaijan.

According to SCC’s bulletin, from January through August 2020 the share of Japan in the total import of Azerbaijan increased to 1.96 percent, while in the same period of 2019 this figure was 1.38 percent.

In the reporting period, the value of export of Azerbaijani products to Japan decreased to $2.4 million while a year earlier this figure reached $88 million.

Meanwhile, the volume of foreign trade operations between Azerbaijan and Japan made up $133.4 million, dropping by 38.7 percent year on year.

Thus, the balance of foreign trade turnover of the two countries for the reporting period remained negative, equating to $128 million.

From January through August 2020, the foreign trade turnover of Azerbaijan amounted to $16.5 billion, which is 27.6 percent less compared to the same period of 2019.

The balance of foreign trade turnover dropped by 22.9 percent over the year, but remained positive, making up $3.18 billion.

Products exported by Japan to Azerbaijan include cars (mainly trucks), mechanisms, electronic equipment, household items, and other goods, while Azerbaijan exports agricultural products (wine, dried fruits), aluminum, and oil to Japan.

In general, Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover amounted to $16.5 billion from January through August 2020, which is 27.6 percent less than in 2019.

The balance of foreign trade turnover on an annualized basis decreased by 22.9 percent but nevertheless remained positive, amounting to over $3.1 billion.
