Iran’s annual revenues from tea exports amount to more than $10 million, Chairman of Iran Tea Organization Habib Jahansaz said, Trend reports citing the organization.

Jahansaz said that taking into account the economic benefits of tea exports, about 8,000 tons of Iranian tea have been exported since the beginning of the current Iranian year (March 20, 2020).

The chairman added that 133,000 tons of tea leaves was harvested in Iran in the current Iranian year. Iran also produced about 30,000 tons of dry tea.

“Iran's tea consumption is about 100,000 tons a year. If 80,000 tons of tea were imported in the last Iranian year (March 21, 2019 to March 20, 2020), this figure amounts 42,000 tons in the current Iranian year,” he said.

In Iran, tea is grown on 26,000 hectares of land in the northern provinces of Gilan and Mazandaran. About 90 percent of tea plantations are in Gilan and 10 percent in Mazandaran Province.

Iran exported 8,250 tons of tea worth $8.37 million during the first 9 months of the current Iranian year (March 20 through December 20, 2020).
