Italian companies eye returning to Iranian energy market

Big Italian companies are interested in returning to the Iranian energy market, Italian Ambassador to Iran Giuseppe Perrone said, Trend reports citing Ministry of Energy of Iran.

He made the remark during a meeting with Iranian Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian.

According to the ambassador, in the near future promising conditions may emerge in the international arena. Thus, Italian companies can return to Iran and develop cooperation in the field of energy, including alternative renewable energy.

Perrone added that a special webinar in the area of agricultural machinery will be organized between Iranian and Italian companies in the near future. He also said that a conference would be held with Italian companies to study trade relations with Iran.

During the meeting, Iranian Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian also noted that there are laws in Iran that support and encourage foreign investors on the construction of power plants. The organization of trade conferences between Iranian and Italian companies can contribute to the development of bilateral relations.

The minister stressed that Iran and Italy have many opportunities for cooperation in various trade and industry, especially in the fields of energy and water. This cooperation can be used to joint work on projects of other countries.

At present, Iran's electricity generation potential is 86,000 megawatt-hours, of which 68,000 megawatt-hours are accounted for thermal power plants.

According to the report of Trade Promotion Organization of Iran (TPOI), the trade turnover between Iran and Italy amounted to 474,000 tons worth $729 million during the first 10 months of the current Iranian year (March 20, 2020 through January 19, 2021). This is a decrease of 30 percent compared to the same period last Iranian year.

So, Iran exported 99,300 tons of goods worth $110 million to Italy and imported 375,000 tons of goods worth $618 million from Italy over the reporting period.
