The unemployment rate in Georgia increased by 3.7 percentage points in the first quarter of 2021, compared to the same period of the previous year and amounted to 21.9 percent, Trend reports via the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).
In the first quarter of 2021 labor force (economically active population) constituted 48.3 percent of the working-age population (population aged 15 and older), which is 3 percentage points less than that was to the corresponding period of the previous year, while the employment rate decreased by 4.2 percentage points and equaled to 37.7 percent.
The labor force participation rate (economic activity rate) in urban settlements decreased by 2.3 percentage points, while that decreased by 3.8 percentage points in rural settlements. The employment rate decreased in urban settlements by 4.9 percentage points and by 3.3 percentage points in rural settlements.
The share of hired employees was 69.4 percent among employed persons that decreased by 1.2 percentage points compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
In the first quarter of 2021, the unemployment rate in urban settlements increased by 5.7 percentage points compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, while in rural settlements that increased by 0.4 percentage points.
Traditionally, the unemployment rate is higher for men than for women. In the I quarter of 2021, compared to the corresponding period of the previous year this indicator increased for women by 4 percentage points, while it increased by 3.3 percentage points for men.
The labor force participation rate (activity rate) is higher for men than for women. In the I quarter of 2021 the indicator for women was 38.2 percent and for men – 60 percent. The labor force participation rate (activity rate) for women decreased by 3.5, while that decreased by 2.3 percentage points for men, compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
"In the first quarter of 2021, the employment rate for women as well as for men decreased by 4.5 and 3.8 percentage points, respectively compared to the corresponding period of the previous year," reports Geostat.
