Potato exports exceeded imports in Georgia - Geostat

BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 16

Georgia purchased 6,600.4 tons of fresh or frozen potatoes for $1.4 million from January through June of this year, Trend reports citing the Georgian National Statistical Office.

In the first 6 months, potato exports exceeded imports. During this period, the country earned $8.8 million from the sale of potatoes.

The bulk of total exports go to Russia ($7.8 million). Other sales markets are Azerbaijan, Belarus, Moldova, Turkmenistan, Armenia, and Kazakhstan. Potatoes were also exported in small quantities to Ukraine, Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates.

As for imports, according to official statistics, in the first half of 2021, 54.5 percent less money was spent on imports of potatoes from the country compared to the same period last year (2020 - $3.2 million).

During this period, Georgia imported potatoes from 9 countries, with the largest import markets in the EU and Turkey:

1. Netherlands - $507,400, 635.3 tons;
2. Turkey - $498,400, 5 361.1 tons;
3. Germany - $308,800, 350.5 tons;
4. Denmark - $58,800, 91.2 tons;
5. France - $29,800, 41.2 tons;
6. Azerbaijan - $29,400, 68.6 tons;
7. Egypt - $6,100, 29 tons;
8. Iran - $2,500, 23 tons;
9. Armenia - $200, 0.3 tons.
