Iran unveils volume of rice to be harvested in country

Iran is expected to harvest 2.2 million tons of rice during the current Iranian year (March 21, 2020 through March 20, 2021), an official of the Ministry of Agriculture Jihad of Iran Faramak Aziz Karimi told IRNA, Trend reports.

According to Karimi, due to the water shortage and other restrictions in Iran for the current Iranian year, rice harvesting in country is estimated to decrease.

“So, Iran harvested 2.9 million tons of rice in the preceding Iranian year (March 21, 2019 through March 19, 2020), while 2.5 million tons in the last Iranian year (March 20, 2020 through March 20, 2021),” he added.

The official emphasized that Iran's annual rice consumption is 3 million tons.

According to Karimi, more than 90 percent of paddy in Iran is cultivated in Gilan, Mazandaran and Golestan provinces.

The official noted that paddy has been cultivated on 654,000 hectares of land in Iran within current Iranian year. Meanwhile, in the last Iranian year, the figure stood at 800,000 hectares.
