Azerbaijan and Iran are implementing joint projects in the Astara County of Gilan Province (northern Iran,) Governor of Iran’s Astara County Abbas Sabir told Trend.
According to Sabir, trade relations between the two countries are developing day by day. A number of plans are being implemented to fundamentally develop trade relations.
The governor also said that the construction of a new car and pedestrian bridge over the Astarachay on the border between the two countries will allow facilitate the passage of both trucks and citizens. The contractor for the construction of this bridge is Iran.
The official also pointed out that the Astara railway terminal has been operating for more than three years. Upon completion of the construction of the terminal, the maximum operation of the terminal will have a positive impact on trade between the two countries.
“Another joint project between the two countries in the Astara County is the expansion of the Rasht-Astara highway. Under the project, the Rasht-Astara highway will be four-lane and the Baku-Astara highway will be connected to the Rasht-Astara highway,” he said.
On January 25, 2022, the foundation of a new bridge over the Astarachay River on the border of Azerbaijan-Iran was laid. The construction of the 89-meter-long and 30-meter-wide bridge is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
The Astara railway terminal is located in Iran’s Astara city on an area of 35 hectares, 1.4 km from the Azerbaijan-Iran border.
According to the intergovernmental agreement between Azerbaijan and Iran, the construction of the terminal began in 2017. The Astara railway terminal, built by Azerbaijan Railways, has been leased to Azerbaijan for 25 years.
Despite the ongoing construction of the Astara terminal, several parts of the terminal have already been ready for operation, and from the beginning of 2018, transshipment operations have been carried out there.
