WB and Azerbaijan to finalize 2006-2009 partnership strategy discussions

The World Bank (WB) leading economist for South Caucasus Christian Peterson is currently in Baku for preparing the final version of the World Bank strategy and partnership project with Azerbaijan (earlier called country assistance strategy), the WB Baku office told Trend.

During the visit he plans to hold meetings at the government on further cooperation issues, as well as to finalize discussions on the new strategy. WB is going to produce to government the strategy project with the list of projects to be funded by it during the following four years.

The partnership strategy is likely to be approved by the World Bank Board of Directors in February.

The strategy total cost is about $1,2 billion. Out of this amount a major part will be allocated by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD). The larger volume is supposed to be allotted for road building some $550 million. For social projects, for reforms in the legal and law enforcement system, accounting standards improvement, rehabilitation of irrigation and drainage systems, water supply system improvement bank also intends to assign loans from the International Development Association.

It should be reminded, during implementation of the last three-year strategy (2003-2005) Рђzerbaijan received funds for implementation of 10 components totaling $190,25 million, from which only $48 million were under IBRD conditions.
