World Bank agreed with GovAZ on water project acceleration

The World Bank agreed with Azerbaijani government on acceleration of water supply system implementation, Trend reports with reference to the Cabinet of Ministers. The water infrastructure improvement strategy was discussed at the meeting with Peter Thompson, director of power engineering and infrastructure, World Bank.

В"Upon discussion of the concept the bank experts had prepared they were proposed to select regions and commence the operations. They confirmed the operations acceleration as it was with road projectsВ", governmental officials said.

Azersu РђРћ offered the bank to include 9 small towns in the project. In turn, WB suggests restoring water infrastructure together with all the donors.

Azerbaijani government opposes such an approach and suggests performing the whole set of operations in selected regions as all these operations shall complete in 3 years, according to Presidents order.

By preliminary information, WB stated its readiness to issue the $150mln credit under the project. Since the main part is issued through the International Bank of Reconstruction and Development, there will be no limit in WBs resources. The final amount of the banks investmnts in water porjct will be defined upon selection of one of variants by Azerbaijan.

This project stipulates creation of automated warning, remote control and data collection system and restoration of water treatment facilities.
