Buffer Zone to be Established in Azerbaijan for Combating Foot and Mouth Disease

Badalova / Some 1.72mln (a total of 5.16mln) anti-foot and mouth disease vaccines will be allotted to Azerbaijan annually during three years for expansion of struggle against foot and mouth disease and establishment of a buffer zone in Azerbaijan for this purpose. The decision was made at the meeting of the International Epizootic Bureau on Spread of African Pig Plague and Foot and Mouth Disease in the East European countries held in Paris. The vaccines will be provided in the sum of $2mln.

According to the head of the Azerbaijan State Veterinary Service at the Agriculture Ministry, Ismayil Hasanov, who participated in the meeting, non-spread of foot and mouth virus in Azerbaijan owes to holding of purposeful measures and establishment of a buffer zone.

It was noted at the meeting that spread of African pig plague in the countries of East Europe dramatically damages their economies. The necessity of corresponding measures on prevention of foot and mouth virus in several provinces of Kazakhstan in order to prevent spread of the virus to other provinces was also mentioned. Foot and mouth virus has already spread in Iran, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Turkey. African pig plague was found in 52 of 65 Georgian regions.

Monitoring exercises are held in order to prevent contamination of animals in Azerbaijan. Import of pork to Azerbaijan has been restricted and border passages are working with special regime.
