At present, the modernization of current Oil Refinery Plants (ORP) is a priority for Kazakhstan, rather than the construction of new ones, particularly on the border with China, Managing Director for the Refining and Marketing of Oil, Daniyar Tiyesov, told Trend .
"The aim of constructing ORPs on the border with China is to produce petroleum products for the Chinese market. But at present, meeting the domestic demand in petroleum products is a priority for us,'' Tiyesov added.
Earlier KazMunayGas, together with the Chinese side, was considering the construction of ORPs with a capacity of 7 million tons of oil per year on the border with China.
According Tiyesov, at present it is necessary to direct all available resources to the modernization and reconstruction of three refineries in Kazakhstan, rather than to construct new plants at the border.
''It is important task for us to resolve the issue of our own refineries, our President, Nursultan Nazarbayev, has said. And we are solving this problem," Tiyesov said.
The Kazakh Energy Ministry has developed a program on the modernization and reconstruction of three ORPs in 2009-2015. The total investment in this project is $3.9 billion.
