Georgia, Tbilisi, Jan.14 / Trend , N.Kirtskhalia /

A conference on the development of Southern Energy Corridor has begun in Batumi.

"The conference aims to create alternative energy corridors for transportation of Caspian and Asian energy resources to Europe," Georgian Prime Minister Nika Gilauri said in the opening ceremony.

Gilauri said the potential energy suppliers and transit countries are thinking about alternative routes after the occurrence of problems in gas supplies to Europe.

"The appropriate operations have been already done in this direction to ensure energy supply through the Ukrainian, Polish, Baltic, Romanian routes," he said.

The prime minister said the importance of the Southern Energy Corridor should be noted in this aspect. "It is necessary to use this corridor, which is the basis for not only the European security, but also for our region, and it is vital for our countries," Georgian Prime Minister said in his speech.

Prime ministers, deputy prime ministers and ministers of energy and industry from 10 countries worldwide are participating in the conference.

A declaration will be signed as a result of the conference.
