A US company is interested in realization of the project on solar energy development in Georgia, Georgian Deputy Energy and Natural Resources Minister Marika Valishvili told Trend over phone on Tuesday.

"A few weeks ago we received a proposal on realization of solar energy project from an American investment group. They want to participate in the project as a 100-percent investor." Valishvili said.

She did not specify the company's name.

According to Deputy Minister, the US company plans to use an area of several hectares in Kakheti region for the project.

Currently the company assesses the project competitiveness.

"They consider the land prices, operating costs, access to the network and to the market," Valishvili said.

Meanwhile, according to Valishvili, solar energy is very expensive compared to other energy sources and it is not competitive in Georgian market at the moment. She supposed the solar project of the US company will be aimed at Turkish market.

"But even in the Turkish market, solar energy is quite expensive," Valishvili said.
At the same time, if the company considers the project as profitable, they can fulfill it, she said.

Earlier Georgian Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili urged to think about using solar energy because Georgia is "sunny country". He recalled his own experience in this area, stressing that one of his companies in Georgia was engaged in this business.
"It is not ruled out that the work will be continued in this direction," he said.
