In near future Azerbaijan will put the new Janub power plant into operation, a report issued on Monday by Azerenergy (production and distribution of electricity in Azerbaijan) says.

'Currently, the commissioning process is being undertaken with the plant start-up taking place very soon. Following the commissioning of the power facility, the capacity of power system as a whole will increase', the report says.

Capacity of the power plant will reach 780 MW. It will operate on the three types of fuel - gas, diesel and fuel oil. From this point of view, this power plant is unique and has no analogues in the countries of Eastern Europe and the CIS.

Commissioning of the new power facility will enhance the energy security of the Absheron Peninsula and southern regions of the country, as well as improve the efficiency of power transmission and distribution systems.

Also, as stated in the report, all the equipment required for construction of the second power unit Shimal with a 409MW capacity has already been delivered to the republic. In particular, work on pouring the foundation are about to finish and construction of a water channel is in progress.

The work on construction of the station is being maintained within a contract signed with the Japanese company Toyo Engineering. Construction work started in 2011.

'As a result of implementation of this project, the power supply of Baku city, towns and the Absheron peninsula will greatly improve', the report says.

Capacity of power plants owned by Azerenergy exceeds 6000 megawatts.

The balance sheet of Azerenergy includes more than 200 substations with a capacity of 500, 330, 220 and 110 kV, as well as six hydroelectric and 13 thermal power plants.
