BAKU, Azerbaijan, Oct. 23

By Leman Zeynalova - Trend:

Ukraine hopes for deepening energy cooperation with Azerbaijan, Sergey Shteluk, economic advisor at Ukrainian embassy in Baku, said in an interview with Trend.

“In the context of successful implementation of the Southern Gas Corridor project by Azerbaijan, which will ensure the delivery of Azerbaijani gas to European markets, Ukraine hopes for deeper energy cooperation with Azerbaijan. Commissioning of Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), as well as Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria (IGB) will create conditions for transportation of Azerbaijani gas to South-East Europe,” he said.

Shteluk noted that with Romania’s joining the Southern Gas Corridor, Ukraine will get an opportunity to import Azerbaijani energy resources via Bulgaria-Romania-Ukraine route.

In this regard, projects are under development to ensure transportation of natural gas resources from Caspian Sea region as part of the Phase 2 and Phase 3 of the Southern Gas Corridor’s expansion, he added.

“Providing the economy with energy resources is a major task for any country. Facing energy blockade from Russia, Ukraine, like no one else, understands the urgency of diversifying sources and routes of hydrocarbon supplies and creating necessary conditions to overcome the monopoly of one supplier,” said Shteluk.

The Southern Gas Corridor is one of the priority projects for the EU and envisages the transportation of 10 billion cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas from the Caspian region through Georgia and Turkey to Europe.

The launching ceremony of the first stage of the Southern Gas Corridor was held in Baku on May 29, 2018, while opening ceremony of TANAP was held on June 12, 2018 in the Turkish city of Eskisehir.

The gas from the Azerbaijani Shah Deniz field has already gone through the first segment of the Southern Gas Corridor - from the Sangachal terminal to the expanded South Caucasus Pipeline.

Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) and Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP) were connected on the Turkish-Greek border.
