Iran's power production capacity up twelvefold

TEHRAN,Iran, Feb.7

Trend:

Iran's power production in the country has grown 12 times since the proclamation of the Islamic Revolution in 1979, said Iran's Minister of Energy Reza Ardakanian, Trend reports via IRNA.

He added that production capacity of Iran's power plants are forecast to grow to 88,000 megawatt.

Ardakanian said that around 60 percent of power plants in Iran are private, as the government has assigned the plants to the private sector to pay its debts.

He admitted that the change of foreign currency rate has affected the price on electricity, and the Energy Ministry is under pressure to bring down the price.

"In the past six years, $9.5 billion has been invested annually in Iran's power industry by the government, while the power industry products have been exported, and brought in about $57 billion worth of revenues," he said.
