It is possible to upgrade the production of 178 unit gas turbines at Iran's thermal power plants, Mohsen Tarztalab, managing director of Iran’s Thermal Power Plants Holding Company, Trend reports citing the Ministry of Energy of Iran.

He made the remark at the event for commissioning of a gas phase at the Shahid Bastami thermal power plant in Semnan Province.

According to Tarztalab, thus, the electricity produced by each gas turbine can be upgraded by about 21 megawatts.

Tarztalab added that this means a reduction in fuel consumption of 15 million liters per year with each gas turbine.

The director said that currently 80 percent of Iran's thermal power plants are owned by the private sector and 20 percent by the state.

"As many as 9 steam phases with a capacity of 1,454 megawatts of electricity will be commissioned in the current Iranian year (began March 20, 2020)," he said.

The director emphasized that the efficiency of Iran's thermal power plants will reach 39 percent this year for the first time.

The power generation of power plants installed in Iran is about 83,000 megawatts.

A phase of the Shahid Bastami thermal power plant in the Shahrud county in Semnan Province (northern Iran) has been put into operation to upgrade the power plant's production by 21 megawatts.
