Azerbaijan remains main supplier of electricity to Georgia

BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 15

In the first half of 2020, Georgia imported 787.05 million kWh of electricity from Azerbaijan, Trend reports via the Georgian Electricity System Commercial Operator (ESCO).

In January-June, Azerbaijan accounted for 415.97 million kWh or 52.8 percent of the electricity imported by Georgia.

As reported, Azerbaijan also transited electricity through Georgia to Turkey in the amount of 82.22 million kWh.

The second major electricity supplier to Georgia during the reporting period was Russia (371.08 million kWh).

Georgia imported $31.8 million worth of electricity from neighboring countries in January-May this year.

In January-May 2020, 787 million kWh of electricity was imported, which is about 28 percent more comparing to the same period of 2019, said ESCO.

According to the forecast of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, the country is expected to generate 12.76 billion kWh of electricity in 2020, which is 4.2 percent less than the initial forecast (13.31 billion 317.9 million kWh).
