Kazakhstan’s Zhambyl region accounted for 20 percent of electricity generated in the country in 2020, Head of the region Berdibek Saparbayev said, Trend reports citing the press office of the government.

He noted that the region is systematically working on the development of renewable energy sources in accordance to the country’s concept of transition to a green economy.

Saparbayev emphasized that Zhambyl region is one of the leading in the country, in the use of renewable energy sources with 16 renewable energy sources operating in the region.

Of these, five are hydroelectric power plants, six are wind and five are solar energy plants. Over the past year, their total electricity generation amounted to 318 MW, which is about 20 percent of total country-produced amount. In general, the region generated 2.5 billion kW of electricity in 2020, of which 24 percent is generated through renewable energy sources.

Compared to 2019, the growth in electricity generation from renewable sources in 2020 was 47 percent. Currently, the region is implementing four projects with a total capacity of 96 MW. These are two wind farm projects and two hydroelectric power plants.

“Two projects will be commissioned this year. The remaining two are planned to be completed in 2022. As a result, electricity generated in the region by renewable energy sources will amount to 415 MW in 2022. In the future, four more projects for the construction of power plants before 2025, which will provide an additional 218 MW of electricity,” Saparbayev said.

He added that all these measures will result in creation of 845 jobs.

“The generation of electricity from renewable sources is to be increase to 633 MW over the next five years. That is, to bring to 45-50 percent the share of electricity generated from renewable energy sources. The work is under control,” Saparbayev concluded.
