Georgia reveals value of balancing electricity imports

BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 16

The balancing electricity imports value to Georgia totaled 35.5 million lari ($10.7 million) in February 2021, Trend reports via the Electricity System Commercial Operator (ESCO).

According to the ESCO, in February, the balance electricity imports constituted 227.15 million kw/h, that is, 21 percent in total supply.

The average weighted price of balance electricity per kw/h made up 15,637 tetri (4,719 cents), while the regulatory power station balance electricity price marked 12.304 tetri (3.71 cents).

The greater part of balancing electricity consists of imported electricity. The ratio of hydropower plants in balance electricity made up 36 percent, wind power stations – 3 percent, and imports – 61 percent.

In February 2021, Georgia imported electricity from the following markets:

- Russia - 258.85 million kWh;
- Azerbaijan - 147.94 million kWh;
- Turkey - 6.93 million kWh;
Total imports - 413.72 million kWh.

In 2020, Georgia bought the most electricity from Azerbaijan. Georgia purchased 726 million kilowatt-hours of electricity from this country, equal to 45 percent of total imports.
