Electricity generation of Iran's hydroelectric power plants to decline

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Apr. 20

By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

The electricity generation of Iran's hydroelectric power plants will be reduced by about 3,000 megawatt-hours daily in the current Iranian year (from March 21, 2021, through March 20, 2022), the Iranian Energy Minister, Reza Ardakanian said, Trend reports citing the ministry.

He made the remark in an event dedicated to the launch of a number of water and electricity facilities in Iran today on April 20.

According to Ardakanian, this is due to reduced rainfall in Iran. The rainfall in the current water year decreased by about 50 percent compared to the last water year.

The minister added that after that, climate change and even a severe drought are possible in Iran. Therefore, both the state and citizens should help reduce the negative impacts.

As reported, on Apr. 20, a number of water and electricity facilities worth 1.75 trillion rials (about $41.6 million) were put into operation in Iran. Iranian Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian and other officials attended the event dedicated launch of these facilities.

The electricity generation capacity of hydroelectric power plants in Iran is about 12,000 megawatt-hours daily.
