Very ambitious reforms carried out in energy sector of Georgia - deputy minister

BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 23

Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

Georgia sees the prospects and future development of the energy sector in full and unconditional fulfillment of the obligations undertaken in the field of energy reform of the Association Agreement with the European Union, said Deputy Minister of Economy David Tvalabeishvili, Trend reports via Georgian media.

According to him, this will allow Georgia to attract investments, create transparent markets and promote competition in the energy sector.

The prospects for the development of the energy sector in Georgia and the ongoing reforms were discussed in a public discussion of the South Caucasus Regional Office of the Heinrich Boell Foundation. The discussion was moderated by Stefan Meister, Director of the South Caucasus Regional Office of the Heinrich Boell Foundation.

Tvalabeishvili acquainted the participants of the discussion with the main priorities of the energy policy of Georgia, the ongoing reforms and directions on which the Georgian government with the support of the European Union is actively working.

According to him, very ambitious reforms are being carried out in the energy sector of Georgia, including the creation of organized energy markets, the development of energy exchange areas, the development and implementation of energy efficiency mechanisms, support for projects in the field of renewable energy sources, etc.

“One of our main goals is to increase the country's energy security. In 2010-2020, the volume of electricity imports increased 8 times, which is a very significant indicator. This is primarily due to the fact that as the country's economic development grows, electricity consumption is growing, which does not keep pace with the pace of development of generating capacities, and we are forced to increase imports. If the process continues in this way, 50 percent of our energy consumption by 2030 will depend on external sources," he noted.
