SOCAR ready to share capacity of Southern Gas Corridor with Turkmenistan

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 14

By Leman Zeynalova – Trend:

Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR has expressed readiness to share the capacity of the Southern Gas Corridor with Turkmenistan, Trend reports quoting SOCAR’s President Rovnag Abdullayev.

Addressing the International Forum on attracting foreign investments to the oil and gas sector of Turkmenistan, he noted that Turkmenistan may also use Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan to transport its rich resources to international markets.

In the first quarter of 2021, around 51 million barrels (more than 6.7 million tonnes) BTC-exported crude oil was lifted at Ceyhan loaded on 70 tankers, as compared to 58 million barrels in Q1 2020.

Since the 1,768 km BTC pipeline became operational in June 2006 till the end of the first quarter of 2021, it carried a total of 3.62 billion barrels (about 482 million tonnes) of crude oil loaded on 4,729 tankers and sent to world markets.

The BTC pipeline currently carries mainly ACG crude oil and Shah Deniz condensate from Azerbaijan. In addition, other volumes of crude oil and condensate continue to be transported via BTC, including volumes from Turkmenistan, Russia and Kazakhstan.

The BTC Co. shareholders are: bp (30.1%); AzBTC (25.00%); MOL (8.90%); Equinor (8.71%); TPAO (6.53%); Eni (5.00%); Total (5.00%), ITOCHU (3.40%); INPEX (2.50%), ExxonMobil (2.50%) and ONGC (BTC) Limited (2.36%).

The Southern Gas Corridor, which is comprised of Shah Deniz 2, the South Caucasus Pipeline Expansion, the Trans Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP), and the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) became fully operational on December 31, 2020.

Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) AG confirmed on Dec. 31 the commencement of gas flows from Azerbaijan. The first gas has reached Greece and Bulgaria, via the Nea Mesimvria interconnection point with DESFA, as well as Italy, via the Melendugno interconnection point with SNAM Rete Gas (SRG).

TAP transports natural gas from the giant Shah Deniz field in the Azerbaijan sector of the Caspian Sea to Europe. The 878 km long pipeline connects with the Trans Anatolian Pipeline (TANAP) at the Turkish-Greek border in Kipoi, crosses Greece and Albania and the Adriatic Sea, before coming ashore in Southern Italy.
