KazMunayGas, Shell to assess implementing pilot project on CCUS technology use

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Sept.3

Trend:

Kazakhstan’s KazMunayGas (‘KMG’) NC JSC and the ‘Shell Kazakhstan BV’ company will jointly explore the potential for the implementation of a pilot project on the use of CCUS technology, Trend reports citing KMG.

The parties signed a Memorandum of Cooperation for the Development of Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage Technology (CCUS).

The signing ceremony was attended by the Chairman of the KMG Management Board Alik Aidarbayev and the Senior Vice President and Chairman of Shell in Kazakhstan Hermann Burmeister.

The memorandum envisages a joint study of the potential for a pilot project on the use of CCUS technology with the aim of defining and developing the main criteria for carbon capture and utilization.

The document is aimed at strengthening the long-term mutually beneficial partnership of the parties, as well as to support Kazakhstan's efforts to achieve the commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions adopted by the country under the Paris Agreement.

Within the signed document, Shell’s technical experts intend to share international experience in implementing similar CCUS projects.

"President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, has set an important task to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. KazMunayGas follows this goal, therefore, carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) technologies are also in our focus, as they play a key role in this. Shell has extensive experience in this area. Today's signing marks an important milestone in our strategic partnership," Aidarbayev said.

"We highly appreciate the mutual understanding and cooperation that have developed over the many years of Shell's presence in Kazakhstan. Our company intends to deepen strategic partnership with KMG and the country,” Burmeister noted. “We are glad that thanks to the memorandum signed with KMG, we have the opportunity to make an additional contribution to the development of Kazakhstan’s oil and gas sector and support its aspirations for ‘energy transition’ - important both for our companies and for the country.”

Currently, Kazakhstan is developing a concept of low-carbon development of the country until 2060.

In this regard, as well as realizing the importance of the climate agenda, KMG also began to develop a corporate low-carbon development program until 2031 with setting target indicators, identifying key measures to achieve them and studying the possibilities of applying de-carbonization technologies at its production assets.
