New refinery of Iran's South Pars Gas Company to start operation

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Sept. 20

By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

The next gas refinery of Iran's South Pars Gas Company (SPGC) will start operating by October 7, 2021, an official of Pars Oil and Gas Company (POGC) Mohammad Mehdi Tavassolipour told Shana News Agency, Trend reports.

The official said that in the first stage, sweet gas will be produced at the unit No. 122 of the refinery, which has been connected to the Iranian gas network not long ago.

“As this gas refinery is not currently operating, 56 million cubic meters of gas extracted from the 14th phase of the South Pars gas field is transported daily to the 9th, 10th and 11th refineries of the SPGC,” he added.

Tavassolipour noted that the new refinery is expected to be ready for production in 2-3 months. There is currently more than 86 percent physical progress in the construction of this refinery.

According to the official, more than 36 billion cubic meters of gas have been extracted from the 14th phase of the South Pars gas field from March 21, 2018 to September 20, 2021. At present, a $5.2 billion project is underway to develop this phase.

Reportedly, the goal of developing the 14th phase of Iran's South Pars gas field is to extract and produce 56.6 million cubic meters of rich gas, 75,000 barrels of gas condensate, 400 tons of sulfur per day, and 1 million tons of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and 1 million tons of ethane per year.

As reported, the South Pars gas field (called North Dome in Qatar) is a joint gas field of Iran and Qatar. The proven reserves of the South Pars Gas Field are estimated at 51 trillion cubic meters of gas, of which 36 trillion are extractable. Iran's share in the field is 14 trillion cubic meters of gas and 18 billion barrels of gas condensate. Iran has so far spent $90 billion on projects of the South Pars gas field.

The phases of the South Pars gas field are located in an area of 3.7 km. Iran has extracted more than 1.8 trillion cubic meters of gas and 2.2 billion barrels of gas condensate worth $335 billion by the end of last Iranian year (March 20, 2021).

Reportedly, Iran is to spend $25-$30 billion to maintain extraction from the South Pars gas field. Iran extracts daily 700 million cubic meters of gas from this field.
