KazMunayGas to launch first hydrogen filling station in Kazakh Atyrau

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Oct. 12

Trend:

Kazakhstan’s KazMunayGas NC JSC (KMG), Atyrau Oil Refinery LLP (Atyrau Refinery) and Air Liquide Munai Tech Gases LLP (French Air Liquide’s Kazakh division) signed on October 12, 2021 a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at the development of hydrogen initiatives in the country within the tasks to achieve carbon neutrality, Trend reports referring to KMG.

The document presupposes interaction of the parties in organizing hydrogen filling stations (VFS) for vehicles with a hydrogen engine, as well as providing the VFS with the hydrogen of appropriate quality from the existing installations of Air Liquide Munai Tech Gases LLP at the Atyrau Refinery. This technology will be presented for the first time in Kazakhstan.

The pilot project includes two stages. At the first stage, by the end of March 2022, it’s planned to install a mobile hydrogen filling station in the city of Atyrau, as well as to purchase buses and light vehicles powered by hydrogen engines to transport Atyrau refinery workers.

As part of the second stage, by the end of 2022, together with Air Liquide Munai Tech Gases LLP, it’s planned to complete a set of works to provide the gas station with the hydrogen of appropriate quality and to launch a hydrogen filling station in Atyrau city.

Hydrogen fuel is an environmentally friendly alternative to gasoline and diesel because the main by-product of its use is water. Besides, hydrogen has a much lower consumption than gasoline - only 0.6 kg per 100 km. The hydrogen filling station consists of a hydrogen storage system, cooling, compression and dispensing devices.
