BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 11. Norway’s Equinor company has discovered oil and gas close to the Troll and Fram area with 4-8 million standard cubic metres of recoverable oil equivalent, or 25-50 million barrels of recoverable oil equivalent, Trend reports with reference to the company.

Temporarily called Kveikje, this is the sixth discovery in this area since the autumn of 2019. Up to more than 300 million barrels of oil equivalent were proven in the five former discoveries.

The Troll field comprises the main Troll Øst and Troll Vest structures in blocks 31/2, 31/3, 31/5 and 31/6. Containing about 40 percent of total gas reserves on the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS), it represents the very cornerstone of Norway’s offshore gas production.

Troll is also one of the largest oil fields on the Norwegian continental shelf, and at peak production in 2002, oil production was more than 400,000 barrels per day. The licence owners are Equinor (51 percent), DNO (29 percent), Idemitsu (10 percent) and Longboat Energy (10 percent).

“As we did with the other discoveries in this area, we will consider tying this discovery to the Troll B or C platform. By utilising the existing infrastructure, we will be able to recover these volumes at a low cost and with low emissions,” says Lill H. Brusdal, Equinor’s vice president for the Troll area.

Plans call for Equinor to drill another exploration well in this area this year.
