Georgia ranks among best in Europe in terms of cashless payments

Georgia ranked third in Europe in terms of cashless payments, Trend reports referring to National Bank of Georgia (NBG).

According to Igor Stepanov, regional director of Mastercard in Georgia and Central Asia, it is a very important result for the country.

As reported, to date, there are seven commercial banks in Georgia that have licenses for Internet acquiring of international payment systems.

According to the National Bank, currently, 6.06 million debit and 600,501 credit cards are in circulation in Georgia. More than a million transactions are carried out daily in the country, and the volume of transactions performed, on average, exceeds 80 million lari ($28.4 million).

According to the official statistics of NBG, as of January 2020, the number of Mastercard / Maestro debit cards was 4.06 million and the number of Visa cards was 1.66 million. The number of debit cards of other payment systems reached 329,831.

The National Bank of Georgia publishes statistics of cashless payments once a quarter.
