South Korea plans to provide a grant of $5.56 million through the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) as part of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) multilateral development project in the Aral Sea region, Trend reports citing the Multi-Partner Human Security Trust Fund for the Aral Sea region in Uzbekistan (MPHSTF).

On December 17, 2020, the government of South Korea and the New York Office of the Multi-Partner Trust Fund signed a standard administrative agreement for South Korea to contribute $1 million to the United Nations Multi-Partner Trust Fund for Human Security for the Aral Sea region in Uzbekistan.

These funds will be used to assist the population of the Aral Sea region in improving their socio-economic conditions, health, and well-being. In addition to this contribution to the MPHSTF, the government of South Korea is making efforts to support various initiatives aimed at the Aral Sea region.

In addition to South Korea, the Trust has received numerous contributions from the governments of Uzbekistan, Norway, Finland, and the European Union to create synergies and identify the best solutions to mitigate the consequences of the Aral Sea disaster.

The Trust Fund, created under the auspices of the United Nations at the end of 2018, provides a single platform for cooperation at the national and international level to address the environmental and socio-economic needs of communities living in the Aral Sea region, as well as to support joint efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
