By Maryana Akhmedova – Trend:
Georgia’s cryptocurrency mining companies from January through December 2021 consumed 588.8 million kWh in total in 2021, which is an increase of 345.3 percent, compared to 132.2 million kWh over 2020, Trend reports via Georgia’s Electricity Market Operator (ESCO).
In particular, the data center of the BFDC Georgia, the subsidiary of Bitfury, consumed a total of 433.6 million kWh of electricity in 2021 - an increase of 229.2 percent, compared to 2020 (131.7 million kWh).
The Geo Meintinans mining company consumed 70.6 million kWh in the reporting period, which is 706 times more, compared to 100,000 kWh over 2020.
The IT Lab company’s electricity consumption in 2021 totaled 58.8 million kWh.
The electricity consumption of the Data Hub company in 2021 amounted to 25.8 million kWh, which is an increase of 6,350 percent, compared to 400,000 kWh in 2020.
Commercial category mining is becoming more and more difficult in the world, Georgia is no exception. Home-based mining is most common in the Mestia district, where citizens do not pay electricity bills, which is why underground mining is a significant problem in the region.
