BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 12. The EU plans to reduce the use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) by 95 percent by 2030, European Union Commissioner for Climate Action Wopke Hoekstra said during the COP29 summit on methane and greenhouse gases, Trend reports.
“We have recently adopted a European regulation on methane. This is the first methane regulation adopted this year. We are establishing requirements and transparency tools that will help provide accurate and open information on fossil fuel purchases in the coming years. The International Methane Emissions Observatory is an important partner on this issue,” said Hoekstra.
According to him, getting all our ducks in a row when it comes to data collection and transparency standards with other big players in the game is also crucial.
“An example of this is our close cooperation with the Japan Importers Initiative to reduce methane emissions, which started just a month ago. A new and more ambitious EU regulation came into force in March this year, and we plan to phase out the use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) by 2050. Already by 2030, we plan to reduce the use of HFCs by 95 percent. We will thus exceed our HFC commitments under the Kigali Amendment at a very low cost. We urge all countries to strengthen their HFC policies. If this is done in such a way that HFC equipment becomes more energy efficient, it will be a winning strategy for all of us,” he added.
