Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:
Fixed broadband Internet services in Georgia are characterized by an upward trend, both in terms of the number of subscribers and in terms of income, Trend reports referring to the Georgian National Communication Commission.
As of 2020, the number of fixed Internet subscribers has reached one million, namely 998,000 subscribers. Compared to 2019, the number of subscribers increased by 6.1 percent to 57,000 subscribers.
In 2020, like last year, the number of subscribers will increase in more regions. The broadband Internet market in Tbilisi is almost completely saturated. In large cities and villages, especially in municipalities where fiber-optic networks are developing, the number of fixed-broadband subscriptions is increasing significantly.
In 2020, compared to the previous year, the number of subscribers in the regions increased by 8.2 percent, while the number of subscribers in Tbilisi increased by 3.2 percent.
Fixed broadband Internet access is available in all cities of Georgia, and out of 3,385 villages in Georgia, the Internet is available in 2,193 villages. Otherwise, within the framework of the project of universal Internetization, the villages will provide the necessary infrastructure for broadband Internet in cooperation with the Open Net Commission with funding from the state and the World Bank. The project will be implemented over the next five years and will gradually cover up to 1,000 villages, bringing the total population to half a million with high-quality Internet access.
