Azerbaijani Government and Microsoft to Protect Intellectual Property in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr S. Babayeva / In the light of the development of ICT in Azerbaijan it is very important to apply legal mechanisms on protection of intellectual property, Azerbaijani Communications and IT Minister, Ali Abbasov, said to journalists on 7 June.

According to the Minister, Microsoft corporation is ready to assist and support Azerbaijan in this undertaking.

The Minister said that the percentage of pirated productions in Azerbaijan was very high, rating between 93-95%.

Protection of intellectual property was included into the packet of documents developed on the basis of the project on formation of a regional innovation area in Azerbaijan.

According to Craig Mundie, the Senior Vice President and Technical Director of the Microsoft, who arrived in Baku on 7 June for a one-day visit, Azerbaijan needs plenty of time for resolving the matter. The major weight is upon the country's government, which must assist in resolving the problem.

The Minister stated that protection of intellectual property was not the only matter in Azerbaijan of interest to the corporation. Microsoft is interested in opening information centres in Azerbaijan and participation in the project of formation of a regional innovation area was revealed during the talks with Mundie.

"The role of Microsoft in the development of Azerbaijan is great and we wish to cooperate," Abbasov said.
