Azerbaijan increases volume of cargo shipment to Turkmenistan in 2020

The total cargo transshipment by the Baku International Sea Trade Port (Baku Port) CJSC made up 4.8 million tons in 2020, Trend reports referring to the press service of the company.

According to the service, the share of transit cargo was 87 percent of the total cargo, or over 4.1 million tons of goods.

At the same time, the number of large-capacity vehicles (TIR) and containers transshipped through the port last year was at a record level (43,218 TIRs, growth by 28 percent).

In 2020, 27,934 TIRs (65 percent of the total) moved in the direction of Baku-Turkmenbashi-Baku, and 15,284 (35 percent) moved in the direction of Baku-Kuryk-Baku.

Meanwhile, a 15 percent reduction took place in railcar handling. Some 19,761 cars (53 percent) were sent along the Baku-Turkmenbashi-Baku route, and 17,686 cars (47 percent) - along the Baku-Kuryk and Aktau-Baku routes.

The number of exported containers increased by 15 percent and reached 40,345 containers in TEU equivalent. The volume of cargo transported at the dry cargo terminal spiked by 2.8 times and amounted to 711,700 tons.

Thus, compared to 2015, there has been a 5-fold increase in the volume of large- capacity vehicles (TIR), 3 times in containers, and 3.5 times in the volume of dry cargo handled at the terminal.
