BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 15. Transshipment of bulk cargo, containers, and wheeled vehicles in Baku International Seaport grows every year, the Head Of Strategic Planning and Development department at Baku International Sea Trade Port Khudayar Hasanli told Trend in an exclusive interview.

According to Hasanli, despite the fact that in the past three years there has been a downward trend in the transshipment of wagons, this indicator increased in the period from January through May 2022, compared also to the same period in 2021.

"I want to emphasize that in the first five months of this year, the total flow of cargo in Baku Seaport increased by almost 20 percent - up to 2.2 million tons. This figure was 1.8 million tons in the same period in 2021,” he said.

“Transshipment of Transports Internationaux Routiers (TIR) vehicles increased by 15-16 percent to 17,800 units. Baku Seaport handled 14,300 wagons (an increase of 18.9 percent) in the reporting period. The growth in container transshipment amounted to 22 percent - up to over 21,000 Twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU)," Hasanli said.

Hasanli also added that the indicators of transshipment of bulk cargo and mineral fertilizers are also growing rapidly.

“The growth in the transshipment of mineral fertilizers has been steadily increasing starting from 2018. A total of 606,000 tons of bulk cargo were transshipped from January through May 2022, of which more than 90 percent, or 558,000 tons, fell to the share of mineral fertilizers. This figure is expected to reach 1.3-1.4 million tons (an increase of 22.5 percent) by the end of 2022," Hasanli said.
