BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 26. The volume of cargo transited through Iranian roads increased by approximately 17 percent during the first six months of the current Iranian year (March 21 through September 22, 2023), compared with the same period last Iranian year, Director General of the Transit and International Affairs Department of Iran Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization (RMTO) Javad Hedayati said, Trend reports.

The director general noted that a total of 5.84 million tons of cargo were transited through Iranian roads in six months. He added that the mentioned volume of cargo was transited by 270,000 trucks.

Meanwhile, in the same period last year, cargo transit via Iran’s roads stood at 5 million tons.

“In the 6th month alone (August 23 through September 22, 2023), 1.14 million tons of cargo were transited via the country’s roads, which is an increase of 44 percent compared to the same period last year. The cargo was transited by 51,000 trucks,” he said.

Hedayati also pointed out that the current government of Iran, which took office in August 2021, has been working to improve economic ties with other countries, especially its neighbors. It has also removed some of the barriers to transit in the country with the help of relevant institutions. These actions are expected to increase the amount of cargo that passes through the country in the next few months.

Overall, 6.2 million tons of cargo were transited through Iran within the first 5 months of the current Iranian year (March 21 through August 22, 2023), which is an increase of 5.4 percent compared to the same period last year.
