President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev called on UN member-states to support Kazakhstan's application for election to the United Nations' Security Council (UN SC) as a non-permanent member for the period of 2017-2018, Novosti-Kazakhstan reported.

Kazakhstan proposed itself for non-permanent membership in UN SC at a general debate during the 66th session of the UN General Assembly in New York on Wednesday.

"We rely on support from the international community", Nazarbayev addressed the participants of the session.

Kazakh Foreign Minister Yerzhan Kazykhanov earlier announced that Kazakhstan expects to become UN SC's non-permanent member in 2016.

Kazakhstan firmly supports the UN's right as the only international authority entitled to intervene in conflict situations, he said in Beijing in September. Kazakhstan intends to advocate this position i f it succeeds in being elected as UN SC's non-permanent member.
